I have severe arthritis and the locks on the side are easy enough for even me to use! If I take the recomended step of dabbing a dot of frosting down before I place my goodies on the tray they don't slide around at all anymore! The unit seals tightly keeping my goodies fresher longer (I use my glass cake dome and cakes go stale in one day). As for clean up- I throw it in the dishwasher and it cleans like a dream. I will admit though that being a cake decorator I always decorate my cakes on a cardboard round (I actually use reusable disks that my hubby cut for me that I cover with wrapping paper to look good)- the reason I am rambling about this is that I don't cut cakes directly on the base (or any other cake plate for that matter) so it never really gets that dirty anyway. Bottom line: I use the heck out of my cake caddy! Sure, I would have liked one of those Art Deco metal cake keepers that I see at the antiques and collectible malls, but they aren't airtight by a long shot. And they have knobs on top, no handles. So I bit the aesthetic bullet and got plastic, and it is fine. This can accommodate a large cake. It is sturdy plastic, with 3 easy side locks that work well and do not seem to be fragile. I recommend cutting out a piece of non-skid waffle-textured shelf-liner to fit the bottom. I did this and my glass cake plate and the cake atop it stayed in place when I swung it around to test it. It should travel well. The seller shipped immediately. Standard shipping got it to the house in just 2 days. Since I love pink and love all things cupcake I was very excited. I just spent the last 2 hours preparing for and making cupcakes and frosting all from scratch to go and surprise my mom at her job in the morning. I carefully placed the cupcakes in their individual stackable holders and was thrilled to see that even with the toppings they still had enough room to keep from touching and that the cups were so deep that they would not fall and tilt on the way to see my mom tomorrow. I made sure to securely fasten the clasps and made sure it was on right. I grabbed the product by the handle with about to put my other hand underneath and the entire thing cracked and fell spilling all my cupcakes all over the kitchen floor. Sadly when put through such "strenuous" tasks as inserting cupcakes, closing the top and attempting to carry the "Cupcake Caddy", this item could not handle the requirements placed upon it. On the other hand this item does have an interesting "Pop Open and Dump" feature in which the Caddy will unexpectedly open halfway and dump all of its contents onto the ground, creating a huge mess for its owner to clean up. The pink container portion of the caddy also is made of incredibly fragile plastic so when the top pops away with no advance notice to the user and the bottom subsequently drops on the ground the container portion will crack, making the whole item useless. So now my girlfriend needs a new cupcake carrier....next time I'll go with a more sturdy material like metal....
